Day 15: The Baby Got Back Flow
Main Points for Today:
WELCOME to your third and last week on this program! You’ve made it so far. Keep it up!! Much more fun is yet to come.
During this week we “level up”—you’ll flow more, try some next-level poses, and enjoy the endurance, strength and flexibility you’ve built up over the past 2 weeks.
This week, let’s root deeper, center more courageously, burn brighter, and fly higher.
You can do this!
About Your Baby Got Back Flow:
Many people know that core strength isn’t just about the front of the torso, aka: the abs…it’s about the back body, too.
But most of them aren’t aware of how deep this “back core” goes, or why it’s crucial to holistic core conditioning.
Today you’ll become one of the rare people who are awake to the why and how of the deeper ‘posterior’, or back core.
You have other muscle meridians besides the Deep Core Line we focus on primarily, and one of them is the Superficial Back Line. Superficial, for our purposes, doesn’t mean shallow, like a selfie queen on Instagram, but rather, it defines something in your body that is closer to the surface (skin) rather than “deeper”, or closer to your core body: the bones.
Muscles often layer on top of one another, and big, huge muscles like your erector spinae, those cables that run along each side of your spine, are on top. What’s underneath them, in the low back, are the quadratus lumborum muscles. The cool kids call them your “QL”.
Your QL is a muscle on each side of your lower back spine, right behind the posas connection to the lumbar. Both are on the side of your lumbar, and they are meshed together in an eternal dance of connective tissue.
They both act on your low back’s alignment, either helping keep it in natural curvature, or pushing it out.
Today, we flow a little more, since you know the moves better now, and I’ll add some new poses and focal points so you can work deeper to properly activate your abs, psoas and QL in concert.
This will support you to fully lift and unfurl your chest, head, neck and arms in each pose, and really express yourself—without losing your core strength or sacred hip, pelvic, lumbar spine and sacral joint alignment —the truest core of your core.
See you on the mat!
Thank you for having your own back with me today!
